Maintaining A Clean Heart

January 15, 2018

I was reading a blog post from The Nester that came across my Facebook newsfeed a few days ago about 5 Things People With Tidy Homes Don’t Do.

It’s a great post about keeping your home clean and organized (so if you’re looking for some tips – go read it!). It really comes down to maintenance and doing little things every day that add up.

After reading, I started thinking about the principles of keeping a tidy heart, so to speak.

In Psalm 24:3-4 we read, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.”

Keeping our hearts pure and clean doesn’t have to be difficult, but it does require daily maintenance!

We can’t ignore our relationship with God, spending time in prayer, or digging into His word throughout the week, then expect to get everything cleaned up and taken care of on Sunday.

If we leave the dishes or laundry all week long, by the end of the week, we’ll have a mountain of work to do. Not only that, but because of our negligence, we’ll have made the choice to live in an increasingly dirty home when the mess could have been easily dealt with when it was made.

The Bible reminds us in multiple places that we don’t know when Jesus is coming back for His bride, but we have to be ready when He does!

Have you ever had someone knock on your door or text to let you know they were on their way over, and it sent you into a crazy cleaning frenzy? You know, where you were shoving things into closets and drawers and piling stuff on your bed to be hidden safely behind closed doors?

I’ve definitely had this happen!

I’ve also been totally at ease with someone dropping by, knowing that I’d kept up with the housework and it was perfectly presentable.

Our hearts should be ready if Jesus chooses to come, no matter the day or time, and that takes maintenance. It’s the little things that add up!

  • Set aside time each day to spend in prayer.
  • Dig into the Word before reading anything else.
  • Deal with bad attitudes, doubt, fear, and other sins ASAP!
  • Ask yourself each day how you advanced the Kingdom of God.
  • Ask yourself what you can do to walk in His purpose tomorrow.

Be intentional about maintaining a clean heart this year!
